Between Marlborough and Hat Gate the two Marlborough & Grafton Railway lines through Marlborough tunnel were altered to a pair of parallel single lines, one going to Savernake High Level, the other to Savernake low Level, while the old steeply graded Marlborough branch was closed. The line to the right is the original Marlborough Railway descending to Savernake Low Level, while the line to the left was the down Marlborough & Grafton Railway line to Savernake High Level, but this is now used for trains in both directions as the old up line has been lifted
